I have an urgency about painting. I paint to express emotions and release something that is uniquely human and, at the same time, transcendent. The act of painting is something of a spiritual connection and a life-defining interaction that has become an essential.
I am a late starter. I have drawn and painted all of my life, but only in the past decade have I been positioned so as to dedicate concentrated time to painting. I work in oils and acrylics with a primary interest in the landscape motif. My focus ranges from loose representational to abstract pieces.
I find mystery and fascination within the possibilities of the landscape. Like the human face, the landscape is a unique and expressive point of attraction; a visual encounter that contains obvious characteristics and hidden, subtle nuances of feeling and emotion. Painting a landscape is not a two dimensional experience for me. I feel an attachment to the scene; a palpable sense of entering into the environment that is represented by composition, shapes, textures and colors. My intent is to tell some of my own story in a painting while giving the viewer a chance to create her or his own story from the work.
Painting for me is a journey and a celebration of the creative nature unique to the human condition. Painting is a vital path to the spiritual; a way to express thanksgiving and gratitude to God for the mystery, beauty and wonder of the created world.
